As the most commonly usedlanguage in the world, English plays an essential role in facilitating tradeand economy in the business world. In order to keep a harmonious atmosphere andreach the final agreement during the trade, people generally use euphemisms toconvey their expectations in a courteous way. However, as a foreign language toChinese people, misapplication or overuse of English euphemisms still exists,which may lead to the breakdown of transactions. Therefore, havingcomprehensive and profound learning of the application of euphemism in businessEnglish is of great importance in today#8217;s business trades.

This paper is goingto focus on the application of euphemism in business English, whichincreasingly become an essential tool of pragmatic strategy in businesscommunication. To better interpret the correct application of euphemism, thispaper initially illustrates some basic euphemism principles, and by combingthese pragmatic principles with practical application in daily life, explainsthe detailed application and major considerations of euphemism ininter-cultural business activities. With more profound researches in euphemism,the author wants to improve people#8217;s communication skills, promote businesssales and make a fortune during the process of business transactions.

Using euphemism is an effective and essential method forpeople to have a smooth communication with others. The history of researchersfrom home and abroad exploring euphemism goes back several decades. Until now,various aspects have been focused on by scholars from different fields,including its definition, classification, function, rules and characteristics.In recent years, studies of euphemisms have a tendency to its social functionsand applications, bringing fresh new air to the normal studies of euphemisms.

1. Previous studies of euphemismin Western countries and China

In Western countries, as early as 1780s, the term #8220;euphemism#8221;was first used by a British writer, George Blunt, and then defined it as #8220;Agood or favorable interpretation of a bad word.#8221; (Neaman and Silver,1983).Afterward, the topic of euphemism aroused the interest of many linguists, includingHugh Rawson (1983), Brown and Levinson (1987), and Allan and Burridge (1991).They made great contributions to the progress of euphemism
