1. 研究目的与意义

Language is an active factor, which reflects the changes of social society and the characteristics of culture. Since the Silk Road opened, the communication between the East and the West has become more and more frequent. And the cultural communication is inevitable. However, there are some difficulties in cultural communication because of different cultural backgrounds. Studying on the cultural translation deeply can be advantageous to cultural communication. Many scholars study on the classical books from western or eastern. However I think that A Dream of Red Mansions is a great book to research because it is named as the encyclopedia of Chinese culture and also a great work in the history of Chinese and world literature. Studying on this book not only helps us know more about Chinese culture, but also helps us know more about the differences between western and eastern.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This essay will primarily discuss the two versions of Hong Lou Meng. One is A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Xianyi Gladys Yang. The other is The Story of Stone by David Hawkes John Minford. Firstly, do study on the cultural contents. Secondly, analyze the factors of cultural translation. Thirdly, do research on the cultural translation specifically through comparing two versions of A Dream of Red Mansions. And the last is summarizing the methods of translational skills on my own points.

3. 国内外研究现状

Since the two versions of A Dream of Red Mansions published in 1980, the study on the skills of translation on Hong Lou Meng has never stopped. And from 1980 to 2016, no matter in western or China, the study on the translation skills on Hong Lou Meng has become a hot topic in the world. Of course, most of studies are on the translation of this work. Now, more and more scholars study Hong Lou Meng on idioms#8217; translation, names#8217; translation, poems#8217; translation, religion#8217;s translation and so on. Some scholars study the social setting through the comparison of different translational versions. And some study the skills and the points of translation through different translational versions. Nevertheless, all of the studies are intended to develop and expand the Chinese culture to other countries and improve the skills of translation to make the communication conveniently.
