In western civilization, people have been using euphemism widely in many different fields. Understanding pragmatic Functions of English Euphemism in social life properly and correct use of English Euphemism are beneficial to avoid pragmatic failure and overcome the obstacles in the cross-cultural communication. It can also improve the effect of English language teaching. In addition, it is necessary for us to accept new things, absorb new information and acquire new knowledge in English language teaching. Only do carefully study on euphemisms, especially in the wide use of English and be familiar with its pragmatic function in social communication can we understand it accurately and use it properly. In the process of communication, only by understanding the pragmatic function of euphemism, it would go smoothly to achieve the purpose of successful communication. Thus, using English euphemisms appropriately in contemporary society is crucial.

Research contents:

This study has analyzed the six pragmatic functions of euphemismin social life. From the origin of the language, and then traced back to the emergence of euphemism, euphemism is ubiquitous in human society as a linguistic phenomenon. It is an crucial part of English and it has penetrated in all areas of our modern life. By ways of example, analyzing the various pragmatic functions of euphemism, and elaborating euphemism are an essential and important social tool to regulate the relationships between humans. The study also mentions that euphemism is essential for relationships in society and English teaching, and it is an important means of maintaining social relationships and interpersonal relationships.

3. 国内外研究现状

Foreign researches: 1. Dennis Joseph 'D. J.#8221; Enright was a British academic, poet, novelist and critic. He punished a book 'Fair of Speech: the Used of euphemism ' in 1985, and put forward 'without euphemisms, the world comes to a halt because of the frication and resentments would arise among people.#8221; The author draws lessons from many linguists and scholars, and he made the research on the principle and method of use euphemism in communication from the angle of pragmatics. 2. Miguel Casas G mez has classified the different definitions of euphemism. Apart from the certain restrictive and singular descriptions, basically, in two groups: the extra linguistic and the strictly linguistic ones. After a critical-descriptive analysis of these formulations from the standpoints of both lexical semantics and communicative pragmatics, a new theoretical proposal for the linguistic treatment of the euphemistic-dysphemistic phenomenon has been put forward, this starts from a distinction between word taboo or linguistic taboo and concept taboo or conceptual interdiction. 3. Helena Halmari is in department of English, Sam Houston State University in USA. He referred to different documents around the world and enumerated many different examples. The article described the various functions of the usage of Euphemism specifically in social life.

Domestic researches: 1. Xiao Li researched that euphemism applications involve in majority of different fields in social life widely. English Euphemism is not only a social phenomenon, but also a ubiquitous linguistic phenomenon in social life. The author also analyzed and discussed the English Euphemisms from the pragmatic functions angle of English euphemism. 2. Qi Pan analyzed the cultural differences between Chinese and English euphemisms in the Cross-cultural Communication in 2011. He made a contrastive study of English euphemisms and Chinese euphemisms by means of the relevant linguistic theories, by which we concluded that euphemism is a linguistic, and particularly a cultural phenomenon. He contended that its development is the outcome of various socio-psychological factors. 3. Baofeng Sun published in Science amp; Technology Information, has explained that in the process of social linguistic communication, due to the different circumstances and conditions, people cannot express certain things clearly in a direct way when they come across something painful, unpleasant, disgusted and even embarrassing. Instead, they have to use some vague, implicit, mild and euphemistic expressions, so as to achieve the purpose of expressing feelings and exchanging ideas and thoughts in an appropriate and light atmosphere. She tries to deal with the application of euphemisms in various fields, thereby reveal some main functions of euphemism.

The second part:A Study on pragmatic function of English Euphemism: The pragmatic function of English Euphemism is to use the harmless or pleasant words to replace those more direct abrupt words and with a kind word to cover up the facts.

The third part:The significance of using English Euphemism in social life: Euphemism is an essential and important social tool to regulate the relationships between humans. It is also essential for relationships in society and English teaching, and it is an crucial means of maintaining social relationships and interpersonal relationships.
