In Bellow''''s novels, intellectuals have serious spiritual crisis and suffer from their lives.In the real life, they can#8217;t find the purpose and meaning of life, and their lonely hearts cannot find a peace place to rest. Intellectuals feel anxious because of lost value and lonely emptiness. Although lonely, anxious and suffering around them, they never give up. After spiritual suffering, Herzog eventually find himself in the countryside villa and seek psychological balance.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

研究内容：

In this paper, through the analysis of the performance and cause of Herzog''''s tragedy,told Saul Bellow#8217;s real intentions, that is the subject of this paper: the author want to find the best way to express his own thought. He expressed himself to the exploration of the meaning of life, persistent and firm confidence. And show that even down but not out in the chaotic society.

3. 国内外研究现状

The fast development of science and technology created material foundation which may change human living conditions. However, the polarizationbetween rich and poor,people did not all live in the affluent and peaceful environment. The national only pay attention to the development of production instead of caring about people''''s destiny. Man and nature lost its harmony; money has become the measure of all value. Business, poverty, ethnic conflicts and social crime filled the entire society; the cold war caused the political hysteria; the government makes people lose the trust. American society is not a common responsibility and it belittle people#8217;s value of the society.Moral degeneration, friendship, love, family of these simple emotion that human should have has become old tales. It is not a complicated social problem he can solve by himself. Herzog can#8217;t go far away from suffering and get out of confusion.

4. 计划与进度安排

I divide this paper into four parts. The first part is the background of Saul Bellow and the Herzog. Because of the rush between Jewish and American, the author was in the contradiction. It is hard for him to find the balance between tradition and modernity. Second part is devoted to a study of how Herzog#8217;s spiritual crisis caused and show four reasons: it deals respectively with Herzog''''s suffering relations with his self-doubt due to his inner tragic complex inside his mind; his tragic life story; the social influence of the time in the U.S; the influence of Bellow, the creator and his Jewish background. The third part is the reflect on the real purpose of Herzog#8217;s spiritual crisis and analysis the meaning of the unique ending.
