1.Major Studies Abroad

Early studies on euphemisms in foreign countries are mainly conducted in three aspects: sociology, anthropology and ethnography. British litterateur George Blunt became the first person who gave out definition of the euphemisms. Then there were a lot of scholars starting to study euphemisms. In the early 1960s, when foreign scholars were studying the relationships between language and society, they found that euphemisms played a really important role in this course and did a large number of researches. The representative book of this time was Totem and Taboo written by Sigmund Freud. He gives a reasonable explanation to the appearance of taboos. Another book Taboo, Truth and Religion deeply studied the appearance, classification, effect and function of taboos. With the development of sociolinguistics, a lot of research results have been achieved. Among them, R.A.Hudson’s Sociolinguistics(1980) made a more detailed description to the taboo language’s definition, significance and function. An Introduction to Language and Society(1983) and Ronald Wardhaugh’s An Introduction to Sociolinguistics(1986) made an introduction to taboos combined with euphemism under the social background. Until the 1990s, the study of euphemisms was still popular and a large number of books and articles were published at that time such as Don’t do it: A Dictionary of the Forbidden which introduced how the euphemisms and communication methods changed with time in different social background and countries. In addition, some articles on euphemisms have been published in academic journals of linguistics. The Do’s and Taboos Around the World gives a detailed introduction to various etiquette in communication which has become a guidebook for people''s communication. In recent years, the researches on euphemisms has become more practical, such as the frequency and distribution of people’s speaking of euphemisms, what are the most commonly used euphemisms and the significance of taboos in psychological research. While studying the pragmatics of euphemisms, scholars also pay attention to the cultural problems reflected in them.
