1. 研究目的与意义
In recent years, with the strategy of 'going global' being taken in depth, the international influence of Chinese culture has further expanded. Film has increasingly become an important carrier of Chinese culture. In 2017, the overseas box office and sales revenue of Chinese films were $ 0.6 billion, an increase of 11.19% over the previous year. Above all, film title translation plays a vital role in Chinese films’ pursuit for public praise and box office in overseas markets. Film title translation studies have surged over the past two decades and the internationalization demand of film has put such study outcomes into practice.
However, lack of uniform criteria and principles for film title translation has brought about mistranslation, under-translation and over-translation on the one hand and on the other, as most of the current studies on Chinese film title translation are based on the previous Chinese translation of English films, the cultural gap and aesthetic differences between China and the West will be magnified during such process.
This paper attempts to summarize the general principles of film title translation and put forward feasible strategies, with a view to offering reference to the practice of film title translation in the future, so as to make Chinese films more internationally reputed.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Based on Chinese and foreign translation theories including Nida’s functional equivalence theory, Vermeer’s skopos theory and Xu Yuan Chong’s Three Beauties Principle, etc., this paper intends to summarize the translation principles and strategies could be adopted by film title translation by categorizing and analyzing the features of Chinese and western film titles from the perspective of rhetoric, grammar and style. This paper is supposed to provide reference for film title translation practices and the external dissemination of Chinese culture.

1.Studies guided by domestic translation standards
In the last two decades, researches on film title translation in China have shown the trend from general to specific and from single to plural. Wu [吴敏] (1995) put forward literal translation, free translation and literal plus free translation of film titles for the first time and then transliteration was added (Bi [毕耕],1999).
At the beginning of this century, some scholars required that before translating, we should have a deep understanding of the content and background of the film at first. Translators were supposed to respect the original name and take into account the reader''''s acceptance ability as well as make film title appealing and of commercial value. (Lin [林津石], 2000).
