1. 研究目的与意义

Ascultural soft power gradually plays an important role in comprehensive nationalstrength, it’s of great significance for China to introduce its literature tothe world. Since Ku Hong-ming’s translation of The Analects, a successful attempt to translate The Analects through cultural rewriting,has been well accepted by Western readers, it can provide good experiences andreferences for other translators to learn, so as to better push Chinese cultureto go global in appropriate ways, and, hopefully, achieve cultural resonance. Nowadaysthe international situation has greatly changed, which means translators orinterpreters should find new ways to disseminate Chinese culture, so throughanalyzing Ku Hong-ming’s cultural rewriting in the translation of The Analects and why he did so, they maybe stimulated to innovatively spread Chinese traditional culture to the West oreven the world by learning good translating experiences of cultural rewritingin Ku Hong-ming’s version. In this way, as more and more Chinese classics areunderstood by Western readers, there will be less misunderstanding of Chineseculture, and the cultural gap will also be gradually bridged, leading to theimprovement in comprehensive national strength because the cultural soft poweris strengthened. Hence, this study will help disseminate the Chinese culture byproviding good translation methods in cultural rewriting.

This paper aims to find out good translation methodsin cultural rewriting for Chinese traditional culture to go global inappropriate ways by analyzing the cultural rewriting in the translation of someculture-loaded words in Ku Hong-ming’s version of The Analects as well as pointing out reasons and influence of his culturalrewriting.

1.Rewriting theory

According to Lefevere (2004), translation is a rewriting process of theoriginal and cannot be separated with rewriting. He believes that rewriting is manipulatedby three factors, patronage, ideology and poetics. It can introduce newconcepts, new genres, and new devices. Through rewriting, people could bebetter aware of the world. Dong[董亦思] (2013) thinks that rewriting is aprocess of reinterpreting of the original contents, and a kind of activity toensure the survival of literary works.

From the perspective of Ma [麻巧玲] (2016), cultural rewriting refersto rewriting due to cultural differences. The purpose of it is to moreefficiently spread the ideological contents, and hopefully promote the culturalcommunication or dissemination.
