1. 研究目的与意义
As a novel about magical world, Harry Potter series are full of creative proper nouns. Despite that they are fresh new, attractive and innovative, their translation is a tough work for it is difficult to find the same word in another language. And translators need to consider carefully about the original cultural context.
Besides, domestication and foreignization are prolonged heatedly discussed by scholars. Some support either of them while others make a combination of both of them. Moreover, translation of Harry Potter series is seldom researched from this angle and the several researches are not broad and deep enough. This paper is beneficial to help translators think how to reasonably utilize domestication and foreignization strategies to make them vivid, humorous and interesting according to the target of this novel.2. 研究内容和预期目标
The paper analyses the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in translation of proper nouns in Harry Potter series from four angles: names of people, spells, magical creatures and place names.
So the key issue to be resolved is how to utilize these two translation strategies in the process of translation to increase the readability of the novel and make a perfect combination of Chinese and Western culture.
Outline
3. 国内外研究现状
Since the idea of domestication and foreignization came into existence, arguments have never stopped. In translation of proper nouns in Harry Potter series, some support the view that domestication strategies should be in a dominant place while others insist on combining two strategies together.
In 1813, Friedrich Schleiermacher (1813) delivered a speech about different methods of translation, mentioning that “there are two. Either the translator leaves the author in peace, as much as possible, and moves the reader towards him; or he leaves the reader in peace, as much as possible, and moves the author towards him.'''' This had inspired Lawrence Venuti (1995) to formally put forward the concepts of domestication and foreignization. The former one refers to “an ethnocentric reduction of the foreign text to target language cultural values, bringing the author back home”, while the latter one means “an ethnodeviant pressure on those values to cultural difference of the foreign text, sending the reader register the linguistic and abroad''. In a more understandable way, domestication expresses foreign language with domestic styles and foreignization keeps foreign language and culture in their original form.
Since it appeared in the academic field, heated discussions haven’t halted. In China, Cai Ping (2002) reckons that domestication strategy should be in dominant place in translation. Wang Dongfeng (2002) holds the opposite view that foreignization is more powerful and important. Other scholars like Zhen Lingling (2007), and Meng Xiaogang (2002) make a combination of the two strategies. Furthermore, some researchers divided the application of domestication and foreignization into various situations. Guo Jianzhong (1998) thinks that according to the purpose of translation, the type of texts, the intention of the author and the readership, both strategies can be applied. Ge Xiaoqin (2002) considers specific social situations when choosing domestication or foreignization. Yuan Xiaoning (2010) thinks domestication is used in the respect of language, and foreignization is applied in light of culture. Xu Jianping (2002), however, believes that English-Chinese translation should use foreignization and Chinese-English translation should use domestication.
4. 计划与进度安排
The paper is divided into four parts. First, an introduction to the theory, including the overview, definition, application of domestication and foreignization and the relevant literature review is given out. The second part is to illustrate the characteristics of proper nouns in Harry Potter series, like integration of Western culture, not only with British culture, but also with other countries’ myths and Bible stories, as well as author’s creation, including her imaginary words and mix of various languages together. The third aspect is to analyze the application of domestication and foreignization for proper nouns in Harry Potter series through four respects: names of people, spells, magical creatures and place names. The final one is to draw a conclusion to the whole paper.
