Matthew Arnold was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools.He has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues.Probably in 1851, Matthew Arnold wrote a short, great and, later, famous poem called 'Dover Beach'. It describes the view of the shingle by moonlight, as seen from a window. It is addressed to an unnamed companion, the poet''s love, whom he invites to listen to the sound of the pebbles 'which the waves draw back, and fling.' In this poem, he reflects the faith crisis of Victoria era.

Loss of faith is the theme of Arnold''''s Dover Beach. The Oxford Anthology of English Literature calls the metaphor of the Sea of Faith is 'a difficult line'. There are different opinions about the loss of faith in Matthew Arnold''''s Dover Beach. On one hand, majority of studies pointed out that the loss of faith refers to the crisis of religious belief. On the other hand, some studies analyzed other aspects of the faith crisis, but some of them didn#8217;t define it. All of these researches combine with the historical background of Victorian era to analyze Dover Beach. However, they didn#8217;t consider the relationship between Arnold#8217;s theory of cultures and Dover Beach. His theory of cultures is the fundamental thought of his works. It is necessary to analyze his theory of cultures. Therefore, this paper will analyze the images of Dover Beach with the historical background of Victorian era and Arnold''s theory of cultures.

Research Contents:

The research will mainly focus on the analysis of images in Dover Beach. Temporarily, this paper analyzes the image of Sea, the image of Night Battle, the images of Sophocles, and the image of Natural Scene. The Research contents will be divided into the following several aspects: First, understanding the historical background of Victoria era. Secondly, understanding Arnold#8217;s theory of cultures. Finally, exploring the symbolic meanings of the images

Problems: The deeper meanings of the faith crisis in Dover Beach.
