1. 研究目的与意义

Feminism is defined as social, political and economic equality of the sexes. As an American-Chinese writer, Kingston#8217;s work, The Woman Warrior, is considered by many as a feminist masterpiece. Li Yinhe, a famous Chinese sexologist, argued feminism was demonized in China that it aroused social disgust and anti-feminist remarks, which had a very negative impact. However, The Woman Warrior is a great example of women#8217;s pursuit of self-value and rights, and will help to enable women to view themselves correctly, emancipate their minds and promote independence.The Woman Warrior is made up by 5 separated stories and portrays five female characters with different personalities and live experience. What#8217;s more, by analyzing the main characters, we can have a better understanding of Chinese American Literature and social and cultural changes.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Since the book involved both Chinese and American cultural and the writer herself was the representative figure of American Chinese Literature, this paper will mainly focus on the analysis of the women characters and find out the influence of time and cultural on their personalities. What#8217;s more, changes of Chinese traditional cultural in America will also be discussed.1. Five women#8217;s countermeasures for frustrations and the influences of cultural or background on them. Taking cultural background and the specific time into consideration and making a comparison of two pairs of women, we can have a better understanding of why did these women live in a totally different life in the story. 2. The situation of early Chinese Americans. The writer, as the early generation of American immigrants#8217; children, was influenced by the stories told by her mother and what happened to her or her relatives. Her growth and influence of her mother#8217;s story on her are worth studying.

Feminism isdefined as social, political and economic equality of the sexes. As Humm (1995) stated that feminism isthe ideology of women''s liberation since intrinsic in all its approaches is thebelief that women suffer injustice because of our sex.

Chinese American literature is the body of literatureproduced in the United States by writers of Chinese descent. The genre began inthe 19th century and flowered in the 20th. Maxine Hong Kingston, asthe first American-born child of Chinese immigrants, restated her early yearsin The Woman Warrior: Memories of a Girlhood among Ghosts. CristinaBacchilega (2008) hold the opinion that it marked animportant step in not only the process of defining a marginalized and silencedChinese American identity, but also in the attempt to legitimate a recognizableAsian American tradition of writing.

The book mixedwith myths, historical stories, dreams, memories and folktales.（YaoJunwei, 2001）.There were five main characters in the book, including the no name woman, Fa Mulan, Brave Orchid, MoonOrchid and the author herself. Different women expressed different personalitywhen faced with obstacles or dilemmas.
