1. 研究目的与意义

Because of cultural differences, translation of news headlines is not only the conversion between different languages, but also a kind of cultural exchange and intercommunication. Excellent translation will intrigue good public response.

The headlines readers in China call for a better translation in economic news. Although some news headlines are translated well, still some headlines translation perplex Chinese readers with bewildering even wrong information, letting alone serve as an entertainment. The quality of translation needs improving, so the translation of news headlines requires theoretical guidance. However, there are relatively few scientific and theoretical studies on the translation of news headlines, which seem to have attracted the attention of researchers in recent years.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

In this research, I will take advantage of a self-built parallel bilingual corpus to analyze official Chinese translation of news headlines from The Economists. Through this research, I will make an analysis on lexical features of English news headlines and Chinese translation. And I will find suitable strategies on translation of news headlines. Additionally, a bilingual parallel corpus is also effective as translation memory for computer assisted translation tools like SDL Trados.

3. 国内外研究现状

Mona Baker started corpus-based translation research paradigm. Translation researchers will be able to reveal the essence of translated text as a communication medium (Baker, 1993). She also pointed out that translation language features, translation norms and translator’s style are mainstream research subjects of this field.

In China, Dr.Hu Kaibao and Dr.Wang Kefei initiated research in corpus-based translation study.

The biggest advantage of bilingual parallel corpus is that the target language can be obtained immediately after the input of the source language and a large number of translation examples can be provided. After screening, a translator can directly usetarget language(杨相苹amp;肖飞,2019, 109-110) Additionally, with the aid of corpus, translation study could be quantified to some extent. There is no doubt that such approach will make research outcome much more accurate.

4. 计划与进度安排

How to build a parallel corpus is the first research question to think of. Though there have been many a parallel corpus while a corpus specialize in news headlines translation is rare. According to essays, collection of resource language and target language is a cumbersome work. While from my point of view, a web crawler is definitely an expert in language collection. Since both resource language and target language are accessible, the next question is alignment. As a veteran tech company focusing in CAT and corpus exchange, Tmxmall offers online alignment service. Thenlet’s think about lexical features of English news headlines. Is there any remarkable differences between words of news texts and those of headlines? What’s the frequency of different words in headlines? Quantitative analysis of news headlines will reveal lexical features of such type of text. And the features provide translators a handbook to translate news headlines.
