1. 研究目的与意义
The paradoxical The Picture of Dorian Gray was intended to expose the essence of art at the moment when it, figuratively speaking, 'loses face', being in the power of hedonistic impulses, that is, the desire for pleasure. The personification of this idea is Dorian Gray himself - a handsome young man who sacrificed his soul for the sake of unfading youth and beauty. 'They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only Beauty,' says Wilde in the Preface to the novel. Indeed, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a work more philosophical and symbolic than realistic. Nevertheless, it reflects the truth of life, which was denied by the adherents of aestheticism, no less accurately than the portrait-the true life and essence of Dorian Gray.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
The relevance of the work lies in the fact that the work of Oscar Wilde is very multifaceted, but not enough has been studied. The purpose of the work is to study in more detail the problems of Oscar Wilde''s work, to try to formulate the main provisions of Oscar Wilde''s aesthetic theory and to find its reflection in the brilliant fragments of his paradoxes, which are so rich in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray , as well as to pay special attention to the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, highlighting the main problems revealed by the writer.
The object of the study is the work of Oscar Wilde (in this case - the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray). The subject of the research is the problems of the writer''s creativity. The material of the work was fairy tales and the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The theoretical significance is determined by the fact that the work will analyze the problems of works and argue the existence of the concept of aestheticism in the literary context. The practical significance of the work is the possibility of using it in literature lessons in the study of Oscar Wilde''s work, in the study of foreign literature in higher education. Perhaps in the end we will come to the conclusion that his philosophy was not intended to shock the bourgeois society of the XIX century, and daring epigrams are fraught with deep meaning. In addition, the fact that Victorian England did not forgive Wilde for his views, turning the dreamer into a criminal, already makes the study interesting.
3. 国内外研究现状
“There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book,” wrote Wilde. “Book are well written, or badly written. That is all.” The aphorisms that make up the “Preface” of Wilde’s novel were his response to those critics who had denounced the immorality and unhealthiness of this story after its scandalous first appearance in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine. However, for all its transgressive delights, The Picture of Dorian Gray could easily be read as a profoundly moral book, even a cautionary tale against the dangers of vice.
The first complete works of the writer appeared in his homeland in England only in 1908, that is, eight years after his death. The publication was accompanied by increased press interest. In all the English magazines and newspapers there were articles extolling Wilde as the greatest writer after Byron, described the circumstances of his life and literary activity. Some journalists went much further, praising Oscar Wilde as a remarkable genius and a great thinker, if not equal to Shakespeare, then at least not inferior to the latter in strength of talent.
The head of Wilde''s literary opponents was W. Henley, who was considered at that time a great English critic. The first weapon to attack the talented poet, novelist and playwright was an article about his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Henley was one of those writers who confound the life of an author with his works, and therefore, considering Wilde an immoral man, he recognized his novel as such.
