Ernest Hemingway, the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature and the Pulitzer, is one of the most talented American novelists in the 20th century. He portrayed the suffering and pain of the whole society resulting from the two World Wars. Besides he emphasized human''s fighting against nature and inevitable failures. Influenced by his personal experiences, especially his experiences in the battlefield, he became a writer with a strong sense of tragic color and began his thought of death. He became the spokesman of the Lost Generation. During his writing career, the Old Man and the Sea plays an important role and it is almost a summary of all his works. By studying the tragic color in The Old Man and the Sea, I can have an overall understanding of Hemingway#8217;s tragic consciousness and his attitudes towards life and death. Furthermore, I can learn to achieve the beauty and dignity of death-- a man can be destroyed but not defeated.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The paper studies the tragic color in Hemingway#8217;s famous work The Old Man and the Sea, and explores how Hemingway shaped the tragic image of the code hero Santiago. Besides it tries to analyze the reason why Hemingway formed the tragic conception in his novel and the great impacts of Hemingway#8217;s tragic color. So the paper is divided into six parts.

The first chapter involves a brief introduction to Hemmingway#8217;s literature achievements and his vision of life after the World War II. The experience of participating in the first World War exerted great influences on his writing. The cruelty of war and the suffering shattered the passion and enthusiasm of the young generation.

The second chapter is the literature review. It includes the research on tragic color, with focus on its development and modern tragedy. The analysis of the tragic color in Hemmingway#8217;s novels is also included. Then Schopenhauer#8217;s tragedy theory will be applied to analyze the tragic color in The Old Man and the Sea.

Studies at Home

Hemingway is one of the writers who has been introduced to China in the early 1930s and quickly becomes popular with Chinese readers. His works have been translated into Chinese in succession such as: A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, The Old Man and the Sea. The Old Man and the Sea is the especially popular one. Some scholars have studied the tragic conception in The Old Man and the Sea. Li qian pointed out that Hemingway,s novels always turn out to be tragic characters. Human beings should overcome death in spirit and realize the value of existence. Liu Jianyang put forward the view that Santiago is psychological cripple and a tragic Christ-like figure. Santiago demonstrates the grace under pressure. He is also a follower of Christ, an acolyte.

4. 计划与进度安排

Before November 10, 2022, determine the title of thesis, make plans and search relevant materials.

Before November 30, 2022, complete the Opening Report and submit it to the tutor.

Before March 18, 2022, search and read related materials, such as literatures, dissertations, journals and monographs to establish the framework of thesis, and then complete the first draft. Meanwhile, translate related foreign materials and fill in the Mid-term Check List, after that, submit them to the tutor.
