1. 研究目的与意义

China and the United States are very different in culture. Due to the differences of history and the living environments, there are differences in language expressions. Color words, as descriptive words, have the same or different meanings in expression. Each color word has its own meaning as a word, and then it was used to express our feelings. With the increasingly close exchanges between China and the United States, the use of the color words gains more and more importance in international communication. People can understand you through casual talking or even the use of words. If we do not have a deep understanding of the similarities and differences of the meaning carried by the color words, we may cause differences in expressing ourselves or understanding others, even make jokes. And this will hinder the exchanges of China and the United States.

This article starts from the similarities and differences of color words in different cultures, followed by the examples of commonly used color words which are put in the cultural comparison between China and the United States. And I hope this article can give people a deeper understanding of the usage and the connotation of color words and thus can deepen the intercommunication between China and the United States.

This study summarizes the scholars#8217; experience through the literature method and the comparative analysis method, and puts forward my own point of view.

3. 国内外研究现状

The status quo of foreign research:

The study of color words has long attracted scholars#8217; attention. Many scholars studied color words from different ways. Many domestic linguists have given great achievements on colors.

In the year 1969, American scholars Berlin and Kay established the book--Basic color terms: the university of research and theory of evolution. In the book, there are 11 basic colors in different cultures: white, black, red green, yellow, blue, brown, purple, pink, orange, gray through investigating color words in 98 languages of the world. This book has great importance in investigating color words and which is used as the basic theory when they study on color words. And then in the year of 1978, Kay, with two scholars Mike and Daniel, published the article that makes adjustments of the basic color words. They thought there are mainly six colors: red, yellow, green, blue, black and white. And other colors are the recombination and derivation from this six basic colors.

British linguist Geoffrey Leech stressed the importance of the meaning of cultural association in word meanings in his book Semantics. Leech thought that color words have a wide use in language. The color words have rich connotation and thus easy to have associations. Therefore these color words are given feelings in some contexts.
