1. 研究目的与意义

The Dream of the Red Chamber, written by Cao Xueqin in Qing dynasty, is one of the outstanding Chinese classic novels. Nowadays, with closer cultural exchanges all over the world, its special cultural deposits attracts translators both at home and abroad to commit themselves to doing researches on this book and finding the best way to translate it. Yet the two versions translated respectively by Yang Xianyi and Hawkes are most valuable for people to do deep research. General speaking, translation of characters#8217; names is a key aspect to make comparisons between the two versions so as that we can find out their similarities and differences.

By analyzing the translation of characters#8217; names in the two versions--one with Chinese characteristics and another with western characteristics, the translation methods used in two different culture will be made clearer. In a broad horizon, the differences between China and the western world also can be discussed in the specific aspects.

3. 国内外研究现状

(1) Domestic Research

Retrieving on CNKI of its Chinese databases in the key sentence of #8220; the translation of characters#8217; names of The Dream of the Red Chamber#8221;, I totally find 154 literatures. When I retrieve on the two key words: #8220;Yang Xianyi#8221; and #8220;Hawkes#8221;, 1423 literature can be found. In the first five pages, there are four literaturesbeing directly related to my thesis. Wang Jing analyzed the two versions of Yang and Hawkes in the journal of Henan Polytechnic University, and got the conclusion that the methods used in translation should be the integration of transliteration and paraphrase. The essay of Zhao Jianzhong, published on the journal of Tianjin Foreign Studies University, indicated such an opinion that cultural deposits among different counties may make influence on methods for translating literature works.

（2）Overseas Research

Retrieving on CNKI of its foreign databases in the key sentence of #8220; the translation of characters#8217; names of The Dream of the Red Chamber#8221;, I find only 49 literatures. Among them, only four are directly related to my thesis. Most of the literature put emphasis on dong researching on the classical novel itself and the cultural differences between countries rather than pay attention to translation of characters#8217; names, which represents that this thesis is researched more in China. In the journal of Asian Social Science, Yuan Gao holds his own opinion that variations of translators#8217; cultural backgrounds are often the reasons of differences in translation versions. In other words, translation is invisibly affected by translator#8217;s aim, ideology and national psychology
