1. 研究目的与意义

Emily Bronte was thought to be the sphinx in the literary world. Wuthering Heights is her only masterpiece and is considered to be one of the most famous works in literature. And this novel helps her win a seat in literature world.

However, it was not accepted by people when it was published in 1847. They were shocked by the violence, brutality and the crazy love. Later, it came to people#8217;s attention and attracted many scholars to devote themselves to the research of the novel. One the most important reason is that it conforms to the contemporary readers#8217; psychology and reading interest. Nowadays, many famous movies and television programs such as The Twilight Saga, Harry Potter and The Vampire Diaries are all adapted from gothic novels. From this we can see how deeply gothic art is rooted in people#8217;s heart.

Therefore, through the study of inheriting and transcending of gothic elements in Wuthering Heights, we can learn how to write better gothic novels to make the literature world more colorful.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

In this thesis, I will use three chapters to analyze the novel in detail. The first chapter is about the relation between Emily Bronte and gothic fictions. It talks about the origin of gothic fictions and its social background as well as its influence on Emily Bronte. The second chapter starts with the inheritance of traditional gothic fictions which involve the inheritance of character, environment, narration and gothic themes. The third chapter explores the transcendence of the traditional gothic fictions and discusses the transcendence in terror, themes, narration and unique female perspective. All in all, this is the inheritance and transcendence of traditional gothic fictions in Wuthering Heights.

3. 国内外研究现状

Until the famous horror writer H. P. Lovecraft examined the development of gothic novels in the work of Supernatural Horror in Literature and extended the gothic tradition to the Bronte sisters then people started to study Wuthering Heights in new perspective. And the study of Wuthering Heights is more comprehensive and more deepen.

In China, people started to analysis Wuthering Heights until 1980s. From 1990s to now, the number of papers on Wuthering Heights was still increasing, and study of narration structure, themes, characters#8217; image, gothic traditions and gothic styles in Wuthering Heights werehot topics. To give a demonstration, Pu Ruoqian pointed out that Emily Bronte inherited gothic themes, characters, environment and plot in the article Wuthering Heights and Gothic Traditions. And Wu Haiming focused on the employment and improvement of the gothic themes, characters, environment and some other aspects in his thesis Wuthering Heights: a Gothic Novel.
