1. 研究目的与意义

Culture, as an important part of human civilization, is created by people in a long time. Politeness as a common culture phenomenon can show us culture from different nations. Politeness is necessary for the development of human civilization.Cross-cultural communication and the development of society cannot be successful without polite language. But different nations have different principles of politeness. Different cultures between China and the west lead to different politeness principles. Courtesy language plays a very important role in the cross-cultural communication. It is the basic element to keep a good relationship. Making comparison between Chinese and English polite language can show us the main contrast between Chinese and western culture. With knowing these contrasts, we can avoid conflict and enhance the relationship.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This paper will make a comparison study between Chinese and English politeness, and expounds the similarities and differences, as well as the reasons and countermeasures. Firstly it will explore the principles of politeness itself and the principles of English and Chinese courtesy language, and giving clear analysis of them. Secondly it will compare the concrete parts of the daily use of Chinese and English politeness, and analyzes these contrasts. Thirdly I will research reasons for these differences. Fourthly we will see how to process cross-cultural communication between China and the west with knowing these differences.

3. 国内外研究现状

The universality and differences of polite phenomena makes politeness researches so complex. Generally speaking, researches of politeness use the Brown and Levinson#8217;s Face Theory and Leech#8217;s Politeness Principle as a frame. Scholars who research the contrasts between Chinese and western politeness are not many. Make a generally survey of scholars#8217; researches of Chinese and English politeness language, we can see that most researches pay attention to the similar part or the different part. There are not many comparative studies of politeness language.We can say that the study of contrasts between Chinese and English polite language has a great significance and academic position. But the focuses on this part are really not enough, so the result is rare. So the comprehensive study of Chinese and English polite language contrasts is really necessary.
