1. 研究目的与意义

Knowing taboo language means knowingwhat we can do under a different cultural background.Taboo language is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also represents a culture.With the development of globalization and international communication, we should learn the differences between English and Chinese taboos. To avoid the conflicts in international communication, we ought to understand the culture behind this linguistic phenomenon of western countries.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The thesis is to study the similarities and differences between English and Chinese taboos, then analyze the reason why they have the similarities and differences to help us pay more attention to taboo languages and get better communication with English speakers.

3. 国内外研究现状

Since 1960s,people began to pay attention to taboo languages. Discussions on the topic can be found in some works, such as R.A.Hudson#8217;s Sociolinguistics. He thought that taboo is a convention in society.Another notable researcher is Timothy B.Jay. He thought that taboo is a language which is related to society. In China, analysis of taboos can be found in Chen Yuan#8217;s book Sociolinguistic. In the late mid-1980s,some scholars in China proposed to develop Chinese Culture Linguistics. As a result, a series of related books were published. In these books, taboos are unavoidably included. In 1997, another reference book entitled Don#8217;t do it:A Dictionary of the forbidden by Philip Thody was published.In this book, Thody clarified how people used taboos in different ages, in different societies and in everyday life.

From the above studies, we can see that taboos relate to social life and different cultures. This thesis will compare the similarities and differences based on cultural and social background to get better communication.
