1. 研究目的与意义

Idioms are derived from a phrase or phrases, and they are the core and essence of language. As a special form of language, idioms have to do with a nation''s geographical environment, historical background, economic life, customs, religious belief, psychological state, values, etc , which can reflect a nation''s cultural characteristics clearly . By studying the differences between English and Chinese languages, learners can get a lot of knowledge about Chinese and Western culture, understand Chinese and western cultural differences, and enhance cultural awareness. The comparative study of English and Chinese idioms is conducive to the development of language, and can promote international exchanges and cooperation. In addition, the study of the comparison of the idioms in English and Chinese language teaching and learning has certain reference value and enlightenment function. Both English and Chinese are languages with a long history in the world. In the long-term development, a large number of idioms are accumulated. Cultural exchanges and cooperation between countries are unprecedented. The research field of English and Chinese idioms is also a new area. As an important part of culture, idioms contrast also became theobject which the Chinese and foreign scholars focuses on An increasing number of experts and scholars carried on study of idioms.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The paper focuses on the contrast between English and Chinese idioms about number, food and animals. It analyses the reasons for these differences. In addition,it probes into the practical meaning and finally draws a conclusion. The research of idioms in English and Chinesecontrast is helpful for learners to accumulate a rich vocabulary of idioms, improve learners'' language application ability, and use idioms effectively in different contexts. In daily life,learners should express idioms correctly and eliminate misunderstanding to avoid conflicts. And, the translation strategies are useful to improve the overall level of scholars, not only language level, but also the cultural literacy. Learners should be familiar with some strategies of idiom comprehension , then try to avoid the negative transfer of mother tongue.

From the beginning of 1980s, the study of idioms has entered a new and prosperous stage. First, cognitive linguistics and psychological linguistics began to intervene in the field of this research, and the meaning, system, concept, motivation and cognitive mechanism of idioms were studied. Second, the theory of pragmatics and social linguistics is also used to explore the communicative functions of idioms. The scope of the study of idioms is constantly expanding, and the level is deepening.The development of various linguistic theories has been used to explain the various aspects of idioms. With the development of applied linguistics, scholars have also discussed the contribution to teaching. In the course of English learning, learners should make more contact and use English idioms more in order to expand the language knowledge of English idioms. Learners should strengthen the comparison between mother tongue and target language in order to prevent the negative transfer of mother tongue. At the time of learning or accepting the form of English idioms effectively , teachers emphasize the possible expression errors, such as article collocation, collocation, single and plural nouns etc.Obviously, scholars agree that cultural background knowledge helps students to understand and master English idioms.Understanding metaphors and establishing effective cognitive systems can facilitate the learning of idioms. At the same time, learners should be familiar with comprehensive strategies about idioms, then try to avoid the negative transfer of mother tongue.
