1. 研究目的与意义

Lord of the Flies is the most famous treatise of Golding. Since it was published in 1954,lord of the flies won the public#8217;s attention gradually. Now, it has been republished for many times and become literary reading for many people.Ecocriticism is an emerging theory of literary criticism. It was proposed in the 1970s,established in mid-1990s,and at the end of the 20th century it became the literary theory of the #8220;famous school#8221;.

The dissertation interprets the novel from the perspective of ecocriticism. Following the criticism of Lu shuyuan, the thesis interprets natural ecology,social ecology and spiritual ecology of the isolated island to further explore the relationship between man and man,man and nature,man and society and man and himself. In doing so,it not only embodies Golding#8217;s keen consciousness of well-balance ecological system at the three levels,but also foregrounds its contemporary relevance when global ecological crisis is becoming more and more serious.

In addition,it#8217;s good for reader to understand the island life of children and the spacial ecological artistic characteristic of Golding which his novel reflects. One of the concerns in the world today is the living dilemma for people,which is caused by environmental protection and climate changes,so it#8217;s valuable to study this novel.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Combining with the symbolism of Lord of the Flies, this thesis introduces the novel from the perspective of the ecological criticism and analyzes the value of the island to reveal the living situation of human in the novel:the bad man-nature relation will lead to the self-destruction and many battles among them.

The dissertation is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction. It mainly tells about the life of William Golding,the plot of the novel,corresponding researches at home and abroad and the theory of ecocriticism. The second part is natural ecology in the novel. It indicates the harmony between man and nature through the description of the beautiful island and Simon--son of nature. It shows conflict between man and nature through the destruction of forests,killing the wild pig and the plundering of the natural resources to express the Golding#8217;s desire to return to nature and his scourge of anthropocentrism. The third part is social ecology. Through the description of the relationship between human and society,people can see the harmony between them and the strict hierarchy of social structure. The fourth part is spiritual ecology. People can see the distortion of character and the loss of homeland awareness. The last part is conclusion. It mainly summarizes the theme.

3. 国内外研究现状

For a long time, the general significance of the novel,Lord of the Flies,put in a nutshell in the human evil by the domestic circles,which points out that this novel reveals the fact that man is killing man and no one knows just why. However, the human evil is reflected not only in human relationship,but also in terms of natural oppression and plunder,and both sides have close relationship. Then,many scholars are gradually interested in the study of this novel with the passage of time,presenting the research trend of diversification. The first is the research of humorous imitation about Lord of the Flies. The representative work is #8220;Primitive Society History#8217;s Funny Imitation#8221; which is written by Wang Weixin(王卫新).The article points out that the humorous imitation of the novel to primitive society proved the universal existence and sensitive-free of human nature-evil. There are many scholars keenly doing researches of lord of the flies from the perspective of psychology in recent ten years,especially Freud#8217;s psychologists. Ruan Wei(阮伟)thinks the novel has clearly maeked the new direction of experimentalism with the future development of the English novel.

Buell Lawrence, the ecological criticism scholars,puts forward environmental unconsciousness. Because the effect of environmental unconsciousness,the island is generally regarded as the external environmental background and the significance of the island is often ignored by critics. This kind of #8220;human centralism#8221; critical conscious suppresses the expansion of interpretation and ignores the importance of the space of the island. But there still many scholars caring the island.
