1. 研究目的与意义

As one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, Xi You Ji enjoys great reputation and renown, which is widely accepted among readers all around the world. Written by Wu Chengen. The novel is loosely based on the pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang, a famous Chinese monk. Wu Chengen displayed a supernatural and mythological world to the reader. Xi You Ji is worth translating into other languages for foreign readers so as to bridge the cultural gap between China and Western countries.

The previous thesis has employed the translated versions of Xi You Ji as the core of their studies. They either compare Jenner#8217;s translation with others#8217;. These authors share some similarities in their studies.

It is widely believed that Jenner#8217;s translation is the most complete and faithful translation among all versions. That#8217;s why most Chinese scholars and professors are inclined to choose Jenner#8217;s version as the subject of their study.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Though many people has studied the book and compared different versions from all kinds of perspectives, the paper aims to analyze the translation version and original version and put forward some suggestions from the view of translation ethics.

This paper focuses on the translation ethics reflected in Journey to the West. The essay is divided into six parts. Chapter one is mainly about Chapter one is mainly about the literature review and current studies of Xi You Ji. Chapter two tells us what is translation ethics, including a brief introduction of translation ethics and the purpose of the research on translation ethics. Chapter three and four are the major parts of the essay. Chapter three analyzes the characters#8217; names in Xi You Ji written by Wu Chengen from the aspect of implied meaning in names. And chapter four focus on comparing Jenner#8217;s translation with the original. This chapter will studies Jenner#8217;s way of translation on cultural words, number words, religious words, and other untranslatable words and his loyalty to the original, such as cultural loyalty and formation loyalty.

3. 国内外研究现状

Since the 19th century, the novel has been translated into foreign languages and has played an active role in introducing Chinese culture to the world. There are three versions are spread widely.

The first was made by Arthur Waley, who named the rendition as Monkey: A Folk-Tale of China. The second famous rendition was made by Anthony C. Yu. He named his version, The Journey to the West. And the third is Journey to the West was produced by W.J.F Jenner in 1955. It has been thirty years after last two versions. The career of translation of Xi You Ji fell into low ebb.

According to the data, before 2005, the study of Xi You Ji in domestic seems like a blank area. And the range of these studies mainly focuses on the micro level. There are seven kinds of the research. The first one is the study on translators and general research. The second one focuses on the translation of titles in English. The third one is about the translation strategies. The forth category studies the translation and comparison between different versions. The fifth pay more attention on the Confucian culture. The sixth analyzes from the perspective of linguistics. And the last one is studying the translation of Xi You Ji on the base of corpus. The perspective of study is narrowed. The problem we are facing is that we hardly can find a new angle to study it.
