1. 研究目的与意义

Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most outstanding novelists in the history of American Literature in the 19th century. Most of the domestic researches on him are focused on his novel the scarlet letter, but little attention has been paid to his short stories. On the surface, The Birthmark tells the story of an extreme technologist who uses the so-called scientific knowledge to explore nature and human body wantonly, but actually it records a cruel wife killing incident. This paper intends to interpret Hawthorne’s short story The Birthmark from the perspective of gaze theory, and analyze the materialization of male to female and female''''s self-internalization in patriarchal society. Angela Carter is one of the most popular female writers in Britain in the 20th century. In Angela Carter''''s whole writing career, the theme of feminism runs through. She is committed to deconstructing the definition of women''''s essence in patriarchal system, subverting women''''s black and white image in patriarchal society, and restoring women''''s true and complete original appearance. The Bloody Chamber is a modern fairy tale based on Charles Perrault''''s Bluebeard. As for The Bloody Chamber, most of the researches focus on the postmodern techniques and strategies such as narrative techniques and intertexuality in it, but less people has focused on the reconstruction of the female subject in the novel. At the same time, now there is no comparative analysis between The Birthmark and The Bloody Chamber. This paper will make a new attempt from the gaze theory to analyze these two articles.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The construction of female images has always been a hot issue in British and American literature. This paper will analyze the process of construction and strategy of female visualization, reviewing it in the gaze theory, and reveals the awakening of female self-consciousness which is hidden behind female visualization created in literature.

Chapter one will analyze the relationship between these two books, The Birthmark and The Bloody Chamber, and the gaze theory, especially the gaze theory of Michel Foucault and the counter-gaze theory of Laura Mulvey. Chapter two mainly focuses on the suppression and discipline of male gaze to female, including the female body, character and thought these three parts. Moreover, chapter three will focuses on the awakening of female self-consciousness from the same aspects as the chapter two. Chapter four makes summary of the game between male and female, making comparative analysis of female''''s thinking and behavior in completely different performance. This paper attempt to show that female''''s adherence to self-consciousness is the confrontation against the patriarchal society and the confirmation of self-identity.

Literature Review on The Birthmark

F.O.Matthiessen points out The Birthmark is a story that an idealistic scientist has determined to remove the birthmark on his young and beautiful wife''s face, which dramatically expresses the theme of pursuing perfection. His understanding sets the tone for the interpretation of the novel. Shannon Burns figures out Aylmer’s obsession with perfection is not different from that of Captain Ahab in hunting white whales. These critics seem to have a very similar perspective on text. In fact, there is one theme that is ignored by most of them.
