1. 研究目的与意义

ZhangPeiji, a famous translator in contemporary China, has made great contributionsto translation cause throughout his life, especially on prose translation.Prose is a traditional literary genre in China, containing rich Chinese culture.With the increasingly strengthened cross-cultural communication, our countryhas endeavored to spread Chinese culture throughout the world. As a kind ofliterary translation, a vehicle for the transmission of culture, prosetranslation plays an important role. In order to spread Chinese prose to theworld, Prof. Zhang has devoted himself into prose translation. SelectedModern Chinese Essays (in three volumes), one of his master works, collectsthe majority of his C-E translations on Chinese classic prose writings. As weall know, the form of prose is unrestricted and flexible. With many Chineseidioms in prose, prose translation is usually confronted with manydifficulties. It’s necessary for us to learn from senior translators’ works andenhance our ability of prose translation.

3. 国内外研究现状

There are lots of domestic studies about Zhang Peiji’s prose translation from the following perspectives: translation theory, translation style, linguistic features and so on. Some scholars took Zhang Peiji’s translation work, Selected Modern Chinese Essays (in three volumes), as an example to analyze the prose translation based on some translation theories. For instance, Jiang Jiabei’s analysis was based on the variation translation theory and Wan Liangjin studied prose translation from the perspective of George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory. Besides, some scholars analyzed Zhang Peiji’s translation style, which was usually embodied in these aspects: diction, sentence structure, command of the whole text, art and techniques, etc. And other scholars studied the linguistic features of Zhang Peiji’s prose translation. Through these thorough studies, they all put forward their own comments and some regrets in Zhang Peiji’s translation. Foreign study on Zhang Peiji’s prose translation is not abundant in that foreign scholars are usually unfamiliar with Chinese prose and culture. However, there are many foreign translation theories on which our analysis on Chinese prose translation can be based.
