1. 研究目的与意义
As a branch of modern linguistic research, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is designed to reveal the complex relationship between language and ideology through the description and analysis of text features. With the prevalence of Critical Discourse Analysis, news discourse has drawn great attention from scholars. Reported speech research has become an important division of news discourse research because of its essential role in news discourse. The analysis of the reported speech in news reports can help readers have an insight into the reporters’ attitude and perceive the ideology implied by news reports.
Covid-19, known as the Black Swan event and a global pandemic, has a sweeping and lasting impact on the world, especially on China and the United States, two major powers in the world. Reports on Covid-19 go hand in hand with Covid-19, but there are few studies on Covid-19 news reports from the perspective of reported speech. The significance of this study is to deepen readers'' and English learners'' understanding of the reported speech and cultivate their critical consciousness. Meanwhile, through comparative analysis, it can help Chinese media workers to grasp the skills of using the reported speech, so as to better air China’s voice and demonstrate China’s image in international communication.
2. 研究内容和预期目标

Reported speech is common and essential in our daily life, and the same is true in news reports. News coverage relies heavily on externally-generated texts from speeches, debates, press releases from different media, government reports, expert commentaries, propaganda from political groups, statements, and personal opinions, among others. News is indispensable from the collection and summary of something someone said to a reporter. Therefore, it is worth our attention and efforts to understand how this reported speech is produced, how it works, and how it affects and shapes our perception of events.
Geis (1987) studies reported speech from aspects of news sources, news receivers, news content, reporting verbs, and tenses. According to his research, news sources can be illustrated both by the names of certain people, which is “a definite description”, and “an indefinite description” (p.80). Fairclough (1992) applies the methodology of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to reported speech and proves that indirect speech is most commonly used to express official opinions in news reports. He (2003) introduces a framework of intertextuality, including linguistic text analysis, intertextuality analysis and social practice analysis. His discourse analysis model boosts the analysis of news discourse.
Some scholars abroad conduct comparative analyses of news from different media in different counties. Nawaf Obiedat (2006) figures out that the news reporters’ purposes and intentions of exerting direct and indirect quotations in news reporting by selecting and analyzing a large number of news reports about two incidents taken from two leading American and two leading British newspapers. Obiedat comes to the conclusion that different modes of quotations show the subjective perspective of the news reporter since he/she merely paraphrases and gives a summary of the content of what has been recorded, written, or uttered by the news-maker. Ashraf (2012) adopts Fairclough''s CDA methodology to analyze intertextuality and its role in reproducing the underlying ideology and power relations in journalism discourse on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the AJE (Aljazeera English) and CNN websites. The research focuses especially on the use of direct and indirect speech to include and exclude the “voices” in news.
