We are now in the midst of a torrent of cultural fusion and conflict. Of course it is necessary for us to pursue a path rooted in our own culture. Besides, there still exists other nation’s advanced culture that worth studying.

When we think about the Jews, the first impression is their long-time vagrancy which are recorded in the Bible. And we are required to remember the content of mosaic commandments in our sophomore year. However, Jewishness represents not only vagabondage, but also humanism that worth talking about.

After the Second World War in the 20th century, a number of outstanding Jewish writers emerged in the American literary world. Saul Bellow is one of the most important figures as a Jewish novelist. He was deeply influenced by the Jewish traditional culture and he also faced both material and spiritual burden of this cultural change. In his novels, the protagonists wander from place to place for various reasons. They all contain the historical precipitation and cultural connotation of the Jews, and then show concern on how modern people seek a foothold.

3. 国内外研究现状

After the Second World War in the 20th century, a number of outstanding Jewish writers emerged in the American literary world. Saul Bellow is one of the most important figures as a Jewish novelist. He was deeply influenced by the Jewish traditional culture and he also faced both material and spiritual burden of this cultural change, though he received a systematic American education.(Yin 2007) In his novel, the protagonist wander from place to place for various reasons. They all contain the historical precipitation and cultural connotation of the Jews, and then show concern on how modern people seek a foothold.(Liu 2007) Critics thought Henderson as the first character who clearly has no Jewishness in Bellow’s novels for he is a typical non-Jewish American.(Yin 2007) However, there really exists Jewishness and several scholars showed their opinions.

The impulse of curiosity, the pressure for knowledge, from the lowest level up to the highest rung of philosophical insight arises only from the struggle to cancel this situation of unfreedom and to make the world one’s own in one’s ideas and thought.(Hegel 98)

With the end of the Second World War, the whole western world was devastated and turned into a modern wasteland. The long struggle and frenzied killing not only exhausted the people, but also deepened their disillusionment with Western civilization.The Jews were horrified to discover that they lived in a chaotic and ridiculous world, and they turned to question themselves constantly.(Zou 2001) The spiritual crisis in the Jews could be seen in Jewish writers’ novels, such as Saul Bellow’s Herzog and Henderson the Rain King. Though Henderson was a rich American in that era, he always felt confused and torturous, so he did a lot of strange things and then began his journey to Africa and achieve a full awakening to self-awareness.
