Pride and Prejudice is the representative works of English writer Jane Austen. It can#8217;t be denied that Pride and Prejudice is one of the greatest love stories in the world. Readers are moved by the love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Figures do not care about their completely diverse backgrounds, and they are brave enough to run after true love. Nevertheless, what impresses readers most is the vivid description of the characters. The main characters, like Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, have different personalities. Especially, Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet bring up five daughters who are utterly different, but all reasons for their characteristics are originated from their family backgrounds. And, Mr. Darcy''s main personality, pride, is also the result of his family environment. The portrayal of family environment is beneficial for comprehending figures. 3. 国内外研究现状
Throughout the history, family environment is meaningful for everyone. Some researchers believe that it is caused by the fact that human beings are the creatures of a habit. The mode of the home will psychologically affect the behavior, feelings and mental health of people. (Samuel Boutruche; Stphanie Bourgeois; Nadine Lyamouri-Bajja, 2008) Other researchers define family environment from three key dimensions - the organization of daily life, the use of language, and social connections, which are useful to compare the ways in which social class shapes the character of family life. And social class, wealth, culture and income will affect how parents rear their children all along. (Annette Lareau, 2002) In the paper, family environment is interpreted from two aspects. One is natural ecological environment, and the other is education environment. According to some researchers, Jane Austen writes three typical natural ecological environments in the Pride and Prejudice - the homes of Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine and Mr. Darcy. For example, the home of Mr. Darcy is grand and magnificent, and a large number of trees are planted here. It is full of beauty and luxury, but it does not look flamboyant or garish. Growing in this environment, Mr. Darcy has much charm and a winning personality in accordance with expectations. (Huang[黄桂凤], 2010) For Elizabeth, although the home of her, is located in a village, each respective room in the house has its own use. The background makes Elizabeth raise her awareness of independence. (Chang[昌根花], 2017) When it comes to education environment, some researchers pay attention to different roles that Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet play in their home. Mr. Bennet is a clever and intelligent father, but he is reluctant to cultivate or care about his daughters, especially in the matter of Lydia. Lydia often makes a fool of herself in the public, while Mr. Bennet takes no notice of it, which is like a permission of asking his daughters to follow their hearts and do whatever they want to do. Until Lydia runs away with Wickham does Mr. Bennet recognize that how serious the issue is. (Wang[王友华], 2015) On the other hand, Mrs. Bennet is the fulcrum of family environment because Mr. Bennet washes his hand of the matter, and they are not rich enough to afford the tuition of four daughters. Mrs. Bennet has to shoulder the responsibility. For Elizabeth, she reckons that she learns everything by herself, while she is educated by her mother actually. In the view of Lady Catherine, only tutors rather than parents could help child to make progress. That is why she despises Elizabeth. (Li[李永霞], 2012) Elizabeth Bennet grows up in such a family. In contrast of nobilities, her family is socially inferior. Her father is a squire, and her mother is a housewife with a strong sense of vanity. And the majority of her sisters and relatives is lack for courtesy, which makes her feel ashamed. All these facts build the foundation for the characteristics of Elizabeth. (Qin[覃礼兰], 2012) In the 18th and 19th century, England was a rigid hierarchy. People belonging to the highest social class were all proud and arrogant. They despised the poor and businessmen, and even cut off the connections with their relatives of inferior social status. In the novel, the pride of Mr. Darcy is originated from the bias of society. He grows up in a circumstance where all people teach him to look down upon those beyond his social circle. (Zhu[朱玉霞], 2008) There are numerous researches related to Pride and Prejudice till now. Chinese researchers do some researches on the influence of family environment, while foreign researchers do not pay much attention to this aspect. Further studies related to the effect of family environment on characters should be done.
