1. 研究目的与意义

American Indian literature has been marginalized for a long time in the field of literary analysis. While Love Medicine, written by Louise Erdrich, can be regarded as the representative work which managed to arouse enormous attention by winning the 406th greatest fiction book award. Native Americans, the inalienable part of America, do deserve further focus and study.

Combined with current living situation of Native Americans, most of them still live on the reservations, the edge of modern society, designated by the U.S. government that cover less than 230,000 square kilometers with poor natural resources and remote location. What’s more, the average rate of unemployment has reached 14.4% and worse still, some communities reached as high as 35%. Hence, the suggestion on how Native Americans can better survive in contemporary world is required.

The root cause of such marginalization: born prejudice and discrimination against primitive tribes can be seriously reflected and criticized by analyzing Native Americans’ survival condition. Combined author’s detailed description with my further interdisciplinary study of Love Medicine, I hope that more people’s attention could be aroused to read and study American Indian literature.

3. 国内外研究现状

Previous Studies on Love Medicine abroad

Up to now, many scholars abroad have already done their research on Love Medicine from multiple perspectives. The main angles of previous studies can be categorized into: investigation of narrative strategies, female image and identity construction analysis under feminist theory and related cultural-study in the novel.

Actually, people have heated discussion on Love Medicine because of its particular genre and unusual narrative technique: Erdrich presents Love Medicine with innovative narrative strategies, rather than omniscient narrative, each character has equitable authority to speak out. In other words, Erdrich prefer using different characters’ voices so that the stories can become more complementary and convinced. Karl Kroeber (2004) once pointed out that Love Medicine indicates multiple voices and languages and it is like a party held in the kitchen, wherever you go, you can hear the voice. Plus, Carol Hunter (1985) stated that Erdrich’s use of oral storytelling in Love Medicine provided an absolutely new reading experience which greatly demonstrated that this approach was naturally benefited from Native Americans’ tradition of “from mouth-to-mouth” and Erdrich’s own inheritance of tribal culture. However, some critics represented by Gene Lyons (1985) held the view that it’s more appropriate to label the novel as a collection of short stories which is lack of one clear theme or the most prominent event that matters in the entire work. On the contrary, Richard Stock highly praised Erdrich for “creating a coherent story without a main character” (Stock, 2016, p.137) while structuring the novel start and end with a dead character June which “add drama to the story overall rather than simple chronology” (Stock, 2016, p.132).
