1. 研究目的与意义

As a representativeof modernism, T. S. Eliot introduces his own poetics of ‘impersonality’ and ‘objectivecorrelative’, which are quitedifferent from the romantic poems. Besides, he tends to use a random list ofallusions, images, symbolism and quotations, which makes his poems difficult tounderstanding, so as his poem The LoveSong of J. Alfred Prufrock. Previous studies in this area most give ageneral interpretation of Eliot’s poems or focus on one image in a poem, whilelack a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the use of the writing techniquesin a specific poem with detailed examples extracted from the concrete text.

AlfredPrufrock, and try to analyze the modernity and the theme of it fromsymbolism, allusion and Eliot’s poetics including impersonality and objectivecorrelative, which can help readers have a better understanding of its languagestyles and the points and reflection of society Eliot wants to express throughthe images and quotations in this poem. Furthermore, this study will provide aperspective that connects Eliot’s writing skills with his poetics and thecharacteristics of modernist poems based on an analysis of a specific text forfuture researchers.

3. 国内外研究现状

1. Previous Studies on allusion and symbolism at Home and Abroad

Both allusion and symbolism are frequently used rhetorics throughout the literary history. As regards allusion, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literacy Terms defines allusion as ‘an indirect or passing reference to some event, person, place, or artistic work’ (Baldick, 1990, p. 6) Moreover, Cuddon defines it as a hidden reference of a person, event, place and artistic work, often relating to history, geography, literature or religion in A Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory (Cuddon, 1998). Therefore, it requires readers’ acquaintance of the image or quotation the author uses. The Bible and Greek mythological stories are valuable resources of allusions in the world (Li, 2008).

Concerning symbolism, ‘In the symbol proper what we can call a Symbol, there is ever more or less distinctly and directly, some embodiment and revelation of the Infinite, the Infinite is made to blend itself with the Finite, to stand visible, and as it were, attainable there’ (Symons, 2002, p. 120). Yuan Xianjun defines symbol in literature as something that can express more than its literal sense. Writers use symbols to convey their points indirectly, which can be divided into two types ——symbols that have universal meanings and those have special suggestions in specific contexts (Zhang, 2009). Symbolism can be defined as the art of depicting ideas indirectly or express them through concrete images without explanation, which requires readers to find out their deeper meanings (Zhao, 2007).

From the previous research we can get the definition and influence of allusion and symbolism. Many analysts have studied the use of these two rhetorics in literature works while allusion and symbolism employed in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock still needs further elaboration with concrete illustrations.
