Little Women is very popular since it has been published. In China,it is one of the bestsellers and required to be read by Junior high schoolstudents. Little Women awakens female consciousness. And it teaches parentsabout love education and encourage children to pursue what they what.

Family ethics play animportant role in maintaining harmonious family relationships, promoting growthand it also reflects the epitome of the society. From parent-child relationship,parents and children are equal. Parents play an important role in cultivatingchildren’s characters and values. In addition, it is also significant to thinkabout the limitation of family ethics such as the restriction on Jo’s artisticpossibilities. This book presents the egalitarianrelationship in marriage, which is quite different from that society. Many readershave great expectation on Jo. But I will provide my reasons to explain why Jochoose to return to home.

This study willresearch family ethics in Little Women. This paper will present the equalrelationship between parents and children and the egalitarian relationship in marriage.The key point is to explain the restriction on Jo’s artistic possibilities andthe reasons why Jo chose to return to family.

3. 国内外研究现状

Since the publicationof Little Women, many scholars havepaid great attention to researching this novel with many different theoriesfrom various aspects. As followed, a brief introduction is presented and thenthe studies of this novel in western countries and in China are concluded.

After Little Women is published, a lot ofscholars have paid great attention to studying the theme of this book. SichemanBarbara (2010) said that “In 19th century, models for nontraditional womanhoodwere scarcity, which made Little Women the paradigmatic text for young women of the era and one in which familyliterary culture is prominently featured.” In 20th century, Judith Fetterley(1979) comments that Little Women isAlcott’s personal “Civil War”. Because what she writes is forced to meet theneeds of the society and family instead of writing what she prefers. DanielShealy (1988) argues that harmonious family relationships are very important inMarch girls’ development. Ann B. Murphy (1990) criticizes that there are stilla lot of artistic possibilities in Jo and Amy. Over the years, many scholarshave done researches about feminism, transcendentalism, puritanism and manyother angles in Little Women.
