1. 研究目的与意义
The Catcher in the Rye written by J. D Salinger has been well received all over the world since its publication, for it resonates powerfully among the youngsters. Therefore, I choose this story to get insight to the chracter and analyse it.
On the one hand, there has been a lot of articles focusing on the personality and characteristics of the main character, and analyzing it in a psychological way. Given it#8217;s a spiritual tragedy; certainly more attention should pay to our character. However, there are other factors contributing to this tragic story, which also reveal the author#8217;s intention. The social background of the story should not be ignored, actually, the author#8217;s personal experience also can be found between the lines, the end of the world war II, left many Americans vulnerable and empty.
On the other hand, Through this study, we may step into the inner world of the adolescent, and be able to understand confusions and growing pains of the youngsters at that time up to nowadays. Nowadays, accompanied by the improvement of material life, more and more people are getting confused, depressed and lost; they can#8217;t find their bearing in life. Just like Holden Caulfield, those young men failed to turn to their parents and friends for advice, and then they just started to do illegal things to escape the sense of helplessness. Therefore, parents and the society are supposed to pay more attention to the mental health of adolescents, and take actions to minimize these avoidable tragedies.2. 研究内容和预期目标
The novel The Catcher in the Rye is full of deep sense of tragedy, and this manifests itself in the main character, Holden Caulfield#8217;s depressed life. To reason out the root of such a tragedy, this paper aims to get insight into the tragedy from three perspectives; the interior journey saturated with struggles of Holden Caulfield, his anger and anxiety about his life; the significant influence from his families; and the prevalence of materialism in the society. By analyzing the story and its social background, this article comes to the conclusion that Holden Caulfield#8217;s rebellion against the world of grown-ups ended up with a tragedy, because he finally made compromise and became a grown-up.
The basic outline follows:
1.Introduction
3. 国内外研究现状
This novel has enjoyed a great popularity all over the world, for it strikes a chord among many young people, which also encourages many scholars to probe into this story from different perspectives.
First, from psychological point of view. some scholars analyzed the personality of the character. Holden possesses a self-contradicted and complex character, he rebels against the mainstream culture and seeks for sincerity in a society full of phoniness; he also struggles with ideal and reality but ended with giving up, in this way, he is a mortal of compromise (初青艳,邵宗音,2004).
Second, from the perspective of external elements ; 'Holden''''s family is affluent, and Holden has plenty of money. His life is physically secure, but emotionally it is a wasteland. Holden is in rebellion against the expectations of his parents who apparently have very little inkling of his inner reality' (Michael Ferguson, 2010, p. 812). After the world war Ⅱ, materialism was prevalent among the American society, at that time, the government carried out McCarthyism politically, some people just shuffled through their life, while others were upset about the phony and vulgar society but acted out in passive aggressive ways (潘丽,张碧竹,1996). Besides, the author bears a close resemblance to Holden Caulfield and he expresses his feelings about this world through this story. After he gained a big reputation over the world, he chose to live in seclusion to get rid of the publicity. He seeks for a world of innocence and peace (朱霞,2010).
