Heroism has always been an eternal topic in the human history; it is a kind of spiritual values in the evolutionary process of human civilization. As the standard of value judgment in ideology, the understanding of heroism in different history and cultural backgrounds has large differences. Therefore the worship and praise to the hero has become the same topic in Chinese and Western culture. It reflects the tendency of values, however, heroes in different history and countries have different cultural connotation and forms.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

I.Research Contents

The purpose of the thesis is to compare the heroic image of Monkey King in Journey to the West and Beowulf in Beowulf and study the cultural roots of these heroes. Mainly through comparative study to analyze the process of character molding, the definition of heroes,aesthetic and cultural values, destiny value and tragedy implication.

So the research contents will be divided into the following several aspects: Firstly, understanding the heroic image of each book. Secondly, analyzing their similarities and differences of each image. Thirdly, study of heroism in the Journey to the West and Beowulffrom the Perspective ofHofstede''s Culture Dimensions. And finally, study the influence of Journey to the West and Beowulf on Modern Chinese and Westerners
